Homework

At Litcham School, we believe that homework is a vital part of every pupil’s learning journey. Homework extends and deepens classroom learning, helping pupils to develop the independence, self-discipline, and study habits they need for future success. It also provides opportunities for parents and carers to be actively involved in their child’s education.

Our Approach

We recognise that pupils have busy lives and that learning happens both in and out of school. Our approach to homework is carefully balanced: we set purposeful tasks that reinforce, consolidate, and extend what is taught in lessons, while ensuring pupils have time for other interests
and family life.

What to Expect

  • Homework is set regularly by subject teachers and is always linked to our curriculum.
  • Tasks are varied and may include research, reading, creative projects, revision, essays, practical work, or preparation for assessments.
  • Homework is posted on Arbor, our online homework system, so that both pupils and parents/carers can easily access details and deadlines.
  • Teachers provide clear instructions and ensure that homework is appropriate for each pupil’s age and ability.
  • Feedback is given in line with our school’s Marking and Feedback policy, helping pupils to improve and celebrate their achievements.

How Much Homework?

As pupils move through the school, the amount and complexity of homework increases to support their growing independence and academic progress. As a guide

Year Group Average Total per Day
Years 7 and 8 45 minutes
Year 9 1 hour
Years 10 and 11 1 to 2 hours

Teachers have flexibility to set homework over a fortnightly period, depending on the subject and current topics. We encourage pupils to manage their time well and to complete homework promptly, allowing time to seek help if needed.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Pupils are expected to check Arbor daily, complete homework on time, and take pride in their work.
  • Parents and carers can support by monitoring Arbor, encouraging a positive attitude to homework, and providing a quiet space for study.
  • Teachers set meaningful homework, monitor completion, and provide feedback and support.

Supporting Success

We reward pupils who consistently complete homework to a high standard, using achievement points and praise postcards. If homework is not completed, appropriate support and sanctions are applied in line with our school policy.

Equal Opportunities

All pupils, regardless of background or ability, have equal access to homework and support. We adapt tasks where necessary to ensure everyone can succeed.
