History

Our history curriculum is delivered through the Cornerstones programme, which is carefully sequenced to help children build their knowledge, skills, and understanding of the subject in a meaningful and progressive way.

Key historical concepts—such as chronology, cause and effect, similarity and difference, significance and hierarchy—are revisited across projects to support deeper learning over time.

All projects also develop children’s historical skills through evidence-based enquiry, encouraging them to ask questions, investigate sources and draw conclusions. The historical periods studied follow the guidance set out in the national curriculum, with specific events and individuals chosen to provide a rich and diverse understanding of both British and world history.
Where possible, history projects are linked with other subjects to create meaningful connections. For example, the project Dynamic Dynasties is taught alongside the art and design project Taotie, which gives children a broader understanding of ancient Chinese arts and culture.

History is taught in the Autumn and Summer Terms, with opportunities to revisit and consolidate learning through some of the Spring Term geography projects. This approach ensures children develop a strong, well-rounded understanding of the past and how it shapes the world today.
